Meske’s Skipper
Hesperia meskei
Meske’s Skipper is rare to locally uncommon. Years ago, it was found in the Piedmont, but most recent records are from the Sandhills counties of Taylor and Crawford. There is a record on June 8, 2008 from the Ohoopee Dunes N.A. in Emanuel County (Pierre Howard and Dan Vickers) in sandhill habitat well south of the Sandhills that traverse the state east-west on a line that runs roughly from Augusta to Macon to Columbus. The habitat is sandhills and other dry habitats where the hostplant, little bluestem (Schizachyrium (Andropogon) scoparius) is abundant. Since Meske’s Skipper is found in North Florida, it is undoubtedly present in more of the Coastal Plain than current records show. There are two broods: the spring flight occurs from mid-May to mid-June, and the fall flight occurs in late September into October. Early Date: (Spring flight) May 22 (Taylor County); Late Date: June 14 (Taylor County). Early Date: (Fall Flight) September 22 (Taylor County); Late Date: September 29 (Monroe County). Conservation Status: Secure.
