Horace’s Duskywing
Erynnis horatius

Horace’s Duskywing is common statewide. The habitat is open spaces such as forest edges, roadsides and clearings. The hostplants are Oaks (Quercus) including white oak (Quercus alba), willow oak (Quercus phellos) (Harris, 1972) and the red oak group (Cech and Tudor 2005). There are multiple broods. The first flight begins in late March and continues into June, coinciding with the early spring flight of the single-brooded Juvenal’s Duskywing. Horace’s Duskywing is more numerous later in the spring and Juvenal’s is much more numerous earlier in the spring over most of the state. Some Horace’s linger though September when they are much less numerous. Early Date: March 22 (Telfair County); Late Date: October 1 (Jackson County). Conservation Status: Secure.
