#3 Hoary Edge, female, Bartow Co, 30 May 2013.JPG

Hoary Edge
Achalarus lyciades

Hoary Edge is common in much of the state, but strangely, there are no records from the Coastal counties. It is also absent from the higher elevations in the Mountains. The habitat is weedy fields and edges in upland areas, sandhills and pine woodlands. The hostplants are various broad-leaved tick-trefoils (Desmodium), wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria and bush-clovers (Lespedeza) (Cech and Tudor, 2005). There are two broods beginning in April south of the Fall Line that occur mostly in May and early June and mid to late July and August. Some individuals linger as late as early October. Early Date: April 1 (Colquitt County); Late Date: October 2 (Talbot County). Conservation Status: Secure.
