Fiery Skipper
Hylephila phyleus
Fiery Skipper is common statewide, but it is unable to survive harsh winters and repopulates the more northerly counties in some years. The habitat is a wide variety of open areas with grasses. The hostplants are Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), crabgrass (Digitaria) and other grasses. There are multiple broods from March (March 4. Johnson County) to November (November 5, Walker County). Early Date: February 9 (Charlton County); Late Date: November 5 (Walker County). Conservation Status: Secure.
