Common Wood-Nymph
Cercyonis pegala

Common Wood-Nymph is common in the Mountains where it can be numerous in meadows and uncommon to locally common elsewhere across the state. It is more difficult to find the Southeastern quadrant away from the Coast. The habitat is large sunny grassy areas, but it is also found along mountain forest roads that are more shaded. The hostplants are various grasses including Purpletop (Tridens flavus) and Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium). There is one long brood from mid-June to October. Some individuals may aestivate in late July and August when their numbers decrease for a time (fide Harry LeGrand). Early Date: June 13 (Monroe County); Late Date: October 7 (Upson County). Conservation Status: Secure.
