Checkered White is uncommon to locally common statewide. It is found in dry weedy fields or in sandy areas. There are three broods with a partial fourth brood: March-April, late May-July, August-September, late fall. The hostplants are Virginia peppergrass (Lepidium virginicum), Shepherd’s Purse (Capsella bursa pastoris) and members of the family Cruciferae, including cabbage and mustard (Harris 1972). On Jekyll Island (Glynn County), a large number of females was observed on June 9 ovipositing on Virginia peppergrass while males nectared nearby. Early Date: February 11 (Burke County); Late Date: December 1 (Berrien County). Conservation Status: Secure.
