Berry’s Skipper
Euphyes berryi
Berry’s Skipper is rare in the Coastal Region north to Screven County and in the Lower Coastal Plain west to Atkinson County. It is found in Florida near the Georgia line with Charlton, Thomas and Brooks Counties and probably occurs in Georgia counties along the Florida line west to Lake Seminole in Seminole County. The habitat is sedge marshes, swamps, ponds, wet powerline cuts and perhaps sawgrass marshes. It frequently nectars on pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata). The hostplant is an undetermined species of Carex sedge. There are two broods: mid-May to late June: May 18-26 (Bryan County), May 19 (Chatham County), May 29 (Camden County), and late July into September: July 22-26 (Bryan County), August 4-5 (Effingham County), August 10 (Screven County), September 14 (Ralph Simmons State Forest, FL one mile from Charlton County GA line). Early Date: May 18 (Chatham County); Late Date: September 14 (near Charlton County). Conservation Status: Imperiled due to loss of wetlands. All colonies should be protected.
