Aaron’s Skipper
Poanes aaroni
Aaron’s Skipper is rare and local in the Coastal counties and the Lower Coastal Plain, but it can be found in good numbers where colonies occur. The southern subspecies that occurs in Georgia is Poanes aaroni howardi, which also occurs in South Carolina and Florida. Some Aaron’s in Georgia occur in freshwater wetlands and swamps, while others occur in brackish marshes along the Coast. The hostplant is not well understood, with some speculation that it is salt grass (Distichlis spicata) in salt and brackish marshes along the Coast, but the inland hostplant is not known. There are two broods: the spring flight is from mid-April to mid-May (April 16 and May 8, Okefenokee Swamp, Ware County and May 24, McIntosh County); the fall flight is from September (September 9, Camden County) to October (October 4, Lanier County). We have a lot to learn about Aaron’s Skipper in Georgia. Conservation Status: Secure.
